Should I Do This?

Rushing is the best way to get an an accurate, first-hand account of whether you feel you want Greek life to be a part of your college experience. First and foremost, it can be a lot of fun. You will parkate in social events, campus involvement, educational programming and other fun activities. The only way to take advantage of these opportunities is to get to know the chapters.

Why should I bother with recruitment?

Some people think that you should only partake in rush events if you have already decided that you want to join Greek life. This is not the case. No one can decide whether or not they want to join without meeting the organizations and seeing what each chapter is all about. With roughly twenty-percent of the TCNJ community wearing Greek letters, you won't know what you're missing unless you give it a chance. If you ultimately decide that Greek life is not for you, the worst that will have happened is you will have met dozens of new people and had a great time!

But what about all those negative stereotypes?

They are called stereotypes for a reason. You CANNOT get a real account of what TCNJ Greek life is really like by judging by what you see in the movies. The idea of Greeks being shallow, drunk partiers who are "paying for their friends" is a huge misrepresentation of a truly outstanding group people. Greek life is about meeting new friends, getting involved, and making the most of your college experience.

I don't want my GPA to suffer.

Well, first off, the Greek student GPA is consistently higher than the non-Greek student GPA-in previous semesters around 40% of Greek Life was included on the Dean's List. All chapters highly stress the importance of academic achievement, have mandatory study hours for new members, and help struggeling members seek the tutoring and help they need. Members of Greek Life also have opportunities to win scholarship money for their academics from their national organiztions.

I'm almost positive I want to join.

Be sure to keep your options open and get to know as many members as possible, so you can make the right decision about which one is the right fit for you. Rushing allows you the chance to identify with each organization and decide which one you would feel the most comfortable with.
